With our current population growth rate, we are predicted to surpass chinese by 2050. We may be the only human race in history to exceed 2 billion by 2100.
It is high time for us to wake up and to direct our resources in the right direction. We should focus on universal education and good health care delivery to become a developed nation by 2050. Any effort to attain this will be greatly curtailed by our rapidly expanding population.
I propose the following measures to minimise our population explosion.
______________________
We should strive to provide UNIVERSAL Family Planning Education and Free Access to contraceptives.
In the beginning, it pays even to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
This program should focus on education and not be coercive in any form or shape
Short term measures:
• To make sex education, family planning and contraception a requirement in high school. It should be a core part of the curriculum. This will also be beneficial in combating HIV and spread of other STD’s.
- Caveat it will reach only the school goers.
• Reaching the public through film stars, sportstars, religious leaders and politicians
• Propagating this through massive advertisement campaigns ie: TV ads etc
• To develop a New Division For Family Program Education & Support.
Needs Full Funding support from government (it will be a highly effective form of health care spending for India)
- To hire & train local unemployed educated youth to get trained as advisors on family planning and contraception guidance.
- It should have equal no. of male and female advisors
- They should be easily accessible
- Be very friendly, supportive and non-coercive
• Following group of people need to see a reproductive advisor for family planning guidance within a specified time.
1. Marriage registration (should see advisor within 2 weeks of registration)
2. To make all marriages accountable and reportable to government authority. Law to make sure all religious institutions are made accountable to report marriages. (this way we could catch those marriages who go unregistered) Reproductive advisor should visit them within 4 weeks of marriage.
Following people should provide certificate of attendance
3. Before applying for ration card or any govt beneficiary program
4. Parents before their child’s primary school enrollment
5. Married couple before applying for bank loans
• Rewards of some form should be given to people who participate & this should be fully enforced.
Long term measures:
More health care funding to expand the services
- Access to family planning services
- Goal to minimize infant mortality rate
Education particularly improving female literacy & independence
Improving standards of life
Reducing the societal pressures to minimize the desire for male child.
